Classification and application of glass fiber

Glass fibers are generally classified according to the composition of glass raw materials, filament diameter, fiber characteristics and fiber appearance. Glass fiber includes ply roving, direct roving, chopped strand, roving, glass fiber felt, friction material, continuous glass fiber, etc.

1、 Composition classification of glass raw materials: it is generally distinguished by different alkali metal oxide content

(1) Alkali free fiber (commonly known as E-glass): R2O content is less than 0.8%, which is an aluminoborosilicate component. It has good chemical stability, electrical insulation and strength. It is mainly used as electrical insulating material, reinforcing material of FRP and tire cord.

(2) Medium alkali fiber: R2O content of 11.9% - 16.4%, is a kind of sodium calcium silicate composition, because of its high alkali content, can not be used as electrical insulation material, but its chemical stability and strength is still good. It is generally used as base material of latex cloth, checkerboard cloth, acid filter cloth and window screen.

(3) High alkali fiber: glass with R2O content equal to or greater than 15%. Such as the use of broken flat glass, broken bottle glass and other raw materials drawn from the glass fiber. It can be used as water-proof and moisture-proof materials such as battery separator, pipe binding cloth and felt

2、 Classification by filament diameter: the filament of glass fiber is cylindrical, and its thickness can be expressed by diameter

(1) Coarse fiber: its filament diameter is generally 30um

(2) Primary fiber: its monofilament diameter is more than 20um;

(3) Intermediate fiber: monofilament diameter 10-20um

(4) High grade fiber: (also known as textile fiber) its monofilament diameter is 3-10um.

3、 Classification by fiber characteristics: fiber high strength glass fiber; High modulus glass fiber; High temperature resistant glass fiber; Alkali resistant glass fiber; Acid resistant glass fiber; Ordinary glass fiber (refers to non alkali and medium alkali glass fiber); Optical fiber; Low dielectric constant glass fiber; Conductive fiber, etc
