Improve radar image resolution
Many ADAS designers are adopting higher-frequency millimeter-wave radar technology because it can improve image resolution and has a larger detection range, which can ensure driving safety under various conditions. However, compared with low-frequency technology, the 76-81GHz frequency band places higher requirements on signal transmission. In order to improve wave transmission, the radome needs to have a very low dissipation factor (Df) and dielectric constant (Dk), a thinner outer wall, and a minimalist design without supporting structures. Existing glass fiber-filled PBT materials often cannot meet these transmission optimization requirements. For example, their Df is generally greater than 0.01. In addition, as semi-crystalline polymers, when they are used in thin-walled parts without supporting structures, they have a greater tendency to warp, which may cause parts to fail during assembly, transportation, and use.
SABIC's new LNP THERMOCOMP modified material surpasses the existing PBT modified material in terms of Df/Dk performance and warpage control, and can reduce the attenuation of electromagnetic waves passing through the radome, which helps to improve image resolution and detection range. They can also enhance the transmission rate and minimize the side cone of the signal beam to improve image quality. In addition, the new LNP THERMOCOMP modified material has higher ductility, can improve the impact resistance of the front and rear covers of the radar device, and has moisture resistance and chemical resistance comparable to existing PBT materials.
Support laser welding
Laser welding is a fast and efficient welding process that helps to increase production. Laser welding of plastic parts has a series of advantages, such as the production of miniaturized and highly complex parts, and can eliminate the use of consumables such as adhesives and fasteners. Precise and firm welding can protect sensitive electronic products from dust and moisture.
SABIC's LNP THERMOCOMP WFC06I modified material for the radar front cover has a laser transmission rate of more than 60%, which is 20% higher than the closest competitor. Customers can take advantage of its wide laser window and low laser power to increase potential yield. Another new brand product LNP THERMOCOMP WFC06IXP modified material can be used as an absorption layer for laser welding.
Wang Qin, Director of Formulation and Application, SABIC Specialty Materials Division, Asia-Pacific Region, said: “To fully utilize the potential of automotive radar in assisted driving and autonomous driving, it is necessary to improve design, improve performance and production efficiency. SABIC will continue to make achievements in materials science. Breakthrough, committed to solving customers’ challenges in optimizing ADAS design. Our new glass fiber-filled PBT modified materials can help customers apply millimeter wave radar and other new technologies to enhance their product functions and contribute to the development of ADAS technology."
