World's first 3D printed fiberglass boat

     The Automotive Additive Manufacturing Boat (MAMBO) debuted on Form next 2019. It is produced by Continuous Fiber Manufacturing (CFM). Continuous Fiber Manufacturing (CFM) is a patented 3D printing technology that involves generating algorithms as a guide The use of robots.

     Gabriele Natale, CEO and co-founder of Moi Composites, said: “We participated in the 2017 Genoa Yacht Show and it was at this event that we came up with the idea of making MAMBO. We first I saw the prototype of the project and put it into practice. Finally, MAMBO arrived at sea today. We have a 3D printed boat, which enhances the concept of customization through a unique design based on the idea of the owner. Customized, so that everyone has the opportunity to understand and experience the sea in their own way."

     The project was led by Moi Composites and brought together experts from the automation, composite materials and marine industries, including Autodesk, Catmarine, Conf industriaNautica, MercuryMarine, MICAD, Osculati and Owen's Corning.

     The 3D printed ship has a span of 6.5 meters x 2.5 meters, weighs about 800 kilograms, and is equipped with a navigation system and a 115cv engine. The hull of MAMBO is based on Sonny Levi's famous Arc i diavolo design, forming an inverted triangle.

     Using the CFM process, two KUKA Quante c high-precision robots from Moi's Milan headquarters and Autodesk Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) in Birmingham, UK were used to 3D print various parts of the ship. These robots continuously inject deposited fibers into thermosetting resin to form fiber-reinforced parts with mechanical properties similar to unidirectional glass fibers. After printing, the parts are joined together and laminated together to make a one-piece sandwich structure.

     Overall, the design and printing process lasted two months. Since its establishment, MAMBO has won the Special Yacht Award from the Board of Directors of Monaco Yacht Group, and also won the 2020 Mark Challenge Spectator's Choice Award.
