As composite materials, reinforced gypsum, reinforced rubber and reinforced concrete offer key strengths in construction applications, according to JEC observers
Reinforced gypsum is composed of gypsum and glass fiber, gypsum is used as a matrix, and fiberglass gypsum roving is used as a reinforcing material. According to JEC Observer, its main advantages are flame resistance, ease of installation, high strength, white color (can be easily prepared with any type of paint) and flexibility (can be forged into any shape and resist harsh weather conditions) .
Therefore, reinforced gypsum is a good choice when construction projects require a lightweight, strong and fire-resistant material in moldings, ceilings, columns or any decorative wall panels.
Among the manufacturers of gypsum reinforcement materials, China Jushi, as the world leader in glass fiber materials, is as famous as Owens Corning of the United States, HD Fiberglass and NEC Glass. In terms of substrate materials, the French groups Lafarge and Saint-Gobain are well positioned. "The global reinforced gypsum market will grow at an annual rate of 6%, with China and North America contributing most of the global growth," said JEC observers, predicting that China's share of the global reinforced gypsum market will reach 29% by 2024.
As far as the material itself is concerned, fabric-reinforced rubber is mainly used in the pipe and tank industry (gaskets, seals, etc.), using rubber as the matrix and glass/carbon fiber or metal as reinforcement. JEC observers detail its main advantages: resistance to deformation, mechanical strength, moisture resistance and dimensional compatibility.
In addition to Toray of Japan, Owens Corning and Hexcel of the United States, China Hongqiao Group, the world's largest aluminum producer, is also engaged in the production of rubber reinforcement materials. JEC observers reaffirmed that China will contribute most of the global growth together with North America, and China's share of the global fabric reinforced rubber market is expected to reach 30% in 2024.
"One of the most economical and affordable building materials with the lowest maintenance costs", fiberglass reinforced concrete is a combination of concrete and steel bars, with concrete as the matrix and steel bars as reinforcement. Reinforced concrete is a strong material that is compressive and ductile – and can be forged into any desired shape, JEC observers said.
In construction, fiberglass reinforced concrete is used in a wide variety of applications, including buildings, bridges, roads designed to carry heavy traffic, offshore structures (quays, quay walls) and low-pressure pipes and ducts. Reinforced concrete producers are global steel giants such as China's Baowu Steel Group and Hegang Group, as well as ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel.
It is worth mentioning that in 2018, China Baowu Iron and Steel Group added another reinforcement material to its product portfolio: carbon fiber, and added a new subsidiary focusing on the research and development of carbon materials - Baowu Carbon Materials. The group declared: "Baowu Carbon Materials will integrate various resources inside and outside the group, steadily build an industrial chain of new materials such as graphite materials, carbon fiber materials, and polyester materials, strive to enhance competitiveness, and become the leader of China's new carbon material industry."
