Types and uses of glass fiber mats

1. Needle mat

Fiberglass needle mat can be divided into chopped fiber needle mat and continuous strand needle felt. Chopped fiber needle felt is to cut glass fiber rovings into 50mm, lay them randomly on the substrate pre-placed on the conveyor belt, and then use barbed needles to punch the chopped fibers into the substrate , while the crochet hook lifts some of the fibers upwards to form a three-dimensional structure. The substrate used can be a thin fabric of glass fiber or other fibers, and this needle felt has a fluffy feel. Its main uses include heat insulation and sound insulation materials, heat lining materials, and filter materials. It can also be used in the production of glass fiber reinforced plastics. However, the strength of the glass fiber reinforced plastics produced is low and the scope of use is limited. Another type of continuous strand needle felt is a felt in which the continuous glass strands are randomly thrown on the continuous mesh belt by a throwing device, and needled through the needle board to form a three-dimensional structure in which the fibers are interlinked. This mat is mainly used in the production of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic stampable sheet.

2. Continuous filament mat

The glass strands formed during the wire drawing process or the continuous strands detached from the strand tubes are spread on the continuous moving mesh belt in a figure-eight shape, and bonded by powder binders. The fiber in the continuous glass fiber mat is continuous, so it has a better reinforcing effect on the composite material.

3. Chopped strand mat

Cut the glass strands (or rovings sometimes) into 50mm lengths, spread them randomly but evenly on the mesh belt, then apply emulsion binder or spread powder binder, heat and solidify, and bond them into short lengths. Cut raw silk felt. Chopped strand mat is mainly used in hand lay-up, continuous board making and counter molding and SMC process. The quality requirements for chopped strand mat are as follows: ①The area quality along the width direction is uniform; ②The chopped strands are evenly distributed in the felt surface, no large holes are formed, and the binder is evenly distributed; ③It has moderate dry felt strength; ④Excellent Resin infiltration and permeability.

4. stitched mat

Chopped glass fibers from 50mm to 60cm long can be stitched into chopped fiber or long fiber mat by sewing machine. To a certain extent, it can replace the continuous raw silk felt. Their common advantage is that they do not contain binders, avoiding pollution in the production process, and at the same time have good soaking performance and low price.

5. Surface mat

FRP products usually need to form a resin-rich layer, which is usually achieved with a medium-alkali glass fiber surface mat. This kind of mat is made of medium-alkali glass c, so it endows the FRP with chemical resistance, especially acid resistance. At the same time, because the felt is thin and the diameter of the glass fiber is small, it can also absorb more resin to form a resin-rich layer, covering the The texture of glass fiber reinforced materials (such as square cloth) plays a role of surface modification. (For some FRP products with high surface requirements, polyester surface felt is basically used now)
